Liga MX
Infinite Stoppage Time

Uriel Antuna @espndeportes

3️⃣ 2️⃣ Minutes of Stoppage Time were added at the conclusion of regulation between Club Leon vs Cruz Azul for Mexico’s top flight professional football division Liga MX. The stoppage time was a result of a blackout sustained in the stadium when the lights went out multiple times. Imagine being a spectator? We took an office poll to determine whether it would be a super-epic time or a not-so epic match to catch live. Follow us to tune into the results! As for Leon vs Cruz Azul…

  • Game ended in a 3-2 Cruz Azul victory

  • first blood was dealt in the 28th minute when Cruz Azul’s Rodriguez outside shot found the back of the net

  • from minute 65-82 the stadium was experiencing lighting issues

  • at the 90th minute, the lights came back on and officials added 28 minutes… in other words over half of a half

  • 3 goals were scored in the extended stoppage time

🔙⌛️⏳️ But the record for most stoppage time goes to Palestinian Premier League. 42 minutes, arguably the longest added stoppage time in football history. A Gaza football referee gave 42 minutes of extra time in yesterday's derby between Shabab Khanyounis and Ittihad Khanyounis, when the match had to be stopped because the lighting on the field was not activated.

  • Maintenance personnel searched for the technician in charge of the lights and did not find him, then searched for the keys of the control room of but couldn't find it

  • the game stopped and it took 42 minutes for the lights to be turned on

  • players returned to play for three minutes until the official time of the match was over and then the extension began

  • the match ultimately ended in a disappointing 0-0 draw to the fans’ dismay

🥇🏆️⏲️ Liga MX 🤝 English Premier League, the Cruz Azul vs Leon match ties the record set between Burton Albion and Bournemouth for the Carabao Cup back in September 2019. During that match, the floodlights went out due to an electrical failure and it took around 24 minutes for play to resume. However, Premier League’s latest regulations implemented for this season bestows referee officials to add an exact amount of time combined for events such as

  • Goals and subsequent celebrations

  • substitutions

  • injuries and treatment time

  • penalties, from moment of offense to the whistle for the penalty kick

  • red cards from the moment of offense to when the player leaves the pitch

🏃‍♀️🗻 For context, the highest altitude sports stadium in the U.S is in Wyoming, sitting at 7,220 feet. This past Tuesday, Bolivian team “Always Ready” (yes, that’s their real name), hosted the highest soccer match ever played in the South American tournament, Copa Libertadores. It took them 45 minutes to settle into the game it seems, as they finished the first half tied 1-1. The second half however, they clearly to have the upper hand as the game finished 6-1 in their favor.
