Friday 05/10

☕️🌦️⚽️ Good morning everyone! All the money in the world won’t win Paris a Champions League. Dortmund held a masterclass last night against the Parisians, defending as a collective group, and capitalizing on a corner kick giving the Germans a 2-0 aggregate lead. Of course, PSG could be considered pretty unlucky, having hit the post a total of 6 times over the course of two games. But the soccer world is better off having Dortmund win their spot in the final over a team that has thrown all the money in the world in hopes of winning a championship.

The Comeback Kings

1️⃣5️⃣ ⌛️ Never. Count. Them. Out. 87th minute and trailing by 1? Real Madrid always seems to find another gear deep in the game, and the whole stadium pushes the team over the line to complete yet another epic comeback. Bayern crumbled in the last minutes and could not hold the Spaniards off, eventually losing the game 2-1. It all look settled when, at the last play of the game, Bayern managed to score a game tying goal but it was flagged offsides prior to the ball hitting the back of the net. The controversy? The play was flagged incorrectly offsides and the play should have been allowed to carry on, with the linesman admitting his mistake to De Ligt. Unfortunate for Bayern? Yes. But they also have themselves to blame for failing to hold on to the lead. Hats off to Madrid who have found themselves in yet another final, this time, seeking their 15th European trophy.

1️⃣ 🏆️ Marco Reus is not finished with his goodbye tour yet. Reus is a hometown hero, and has recently announced that this season will be his last with the Black and Yellow. There’s much to be said about a player who decided to stick with Dortmund in an era where Bayern would constantly poach talent in order to fuel its historic Bundesliga winning run. For this, the fans love him, and sending him off a Champions League winner was likely not in their bingo cards for this season. They’re going to have an uphill battle however as they will have to face-off the most winningest team in Champions League history, Real Madrid

You stay classy Leeds United?

🤩💰️If There’s a Will There’s a Way, and Leeds United may have just found their Will. Hollywood actor Will Ferrell has joined Leeds United as a minority investor. Leeds owners, 49ers Enterprises, have a list of high-profile minority stakeholders including actor Russell Crow, Olympic Gold Medalist Michael Phelps, and Golf champion Joran Spieth. At the age of 56, Ferrell seems to have set his eyes on his second career and has bought a small stake in the Championship club to join, with the club’s general partners still in day-to-day control. 49ers Enterprises, have owned 44% of the club since completing their full takeover back in July. Ferrell is already a part-owner of MLS side Los Angeles FC, he follows other stars dabbling into sports team ownership:

  • Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have enjoyed meteoric success with Wrexham

  • JJ Watt and his wife Kealia have invested in Burnley last May

  • NFL goat Tom Brady joined ownership group at Birmingham City this past August

  • Ferrell, valued at $130M, is said to have fallen in love with English football and has been a regular visitor at the grounds

🏟️🤔 What’s this Ownership group you speak of? 49ers Enterprises created Leeds United investment group by splitting it into two sections— general partners and limited partners. Financially, the first group are the main players in the Leeds United Project with the most serious funding including Australian businessmen Peter Lowy and US entrepreneur Rudy Cline-Thomas, who is the club’s vice chairman. Right just behind these heavy-hitters, come the limited partners, with the celebrity studded cast wh have invested Leeds at a much lower level. As for Ferrell, we’ll let’s say he won’t be calling nay shots the boardroom just yet.

  • Leeds missed out on automatic promotion to the Premier League on the final day of the regular Championship season after their 2-1 home defeat to Southhampton and Ipwich’s 2-0 win against Huddersfield on Saturday
