❌🦁 No sleeves, no problem. Twenty-two years ago the African Cup of Nations was held in Mali, and let’s just say the Cameroon men’s team did the unthinkable. The Indomitable Lions pulled up to the scene wearing red shorts, yellow socks, and the iconic PUMA jerseys, resembling a basketball tank top. The Cameroon Football Federation at the time found no issue with this unseen variation. They wore it across all of their matches that tournament including the final against Senegal, where Cameroon were crowned champs. While on the other hand, FIFA had their fair share of quarrel with the sleeveless kits.

  • The jerseys were not capable of attaching tournament patches

  • FIFA rejected them, claiming they were not shirts but vests

  • Cameroon and PUMA attempted a tug of war but lost to FIFA

  • FIFA in response changed their regulations, banning the vest-kit at the 2002 South Korea-Japan World Cup

  • Cameroon in turn added black sleeves to the kits to adhere to the changes

😝😅 it wasn’t over in 2002. Fast forward to 2004, Cameroon-PUMA struck back. This time, it wasn’t with the sleeves, together they launched the red and green “bodysuit” . FIFA then president, Sepp Blatter, issued a rule emphasizing that all shirts and shorts must be separate clothing items. Nonetheless Cameroon ignored Sepp’s orders and continued playing with the uniform. Cameroon were fined €130,000 and a 6-point deduction in the 2006 World Cup.
