🏃‍♀️📈 The FA cup never disappoints. A clash of heavyweights took place yesterday between Manchester United and Liverpool. The game was filled with plenty of drama, extra time, and a total of 7 goals. In the end, it was Manchester United that advanced to the next round, an upset many did not see coming, but a performance that should be respected by all- especially given Manchester’s recent struggles.

💷🧑‍⚖️ British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has signed off on a bill that will introduce an Independent Regulator. The Football Governance Bill provides the Independent Regulator of Football (IREF) will have the power to step in toe address cash flow and other systemic issues within clues, many of which are financially vulnerable. The IREF will apply to the top five tiers of English men’s football with power to address financial regulation compliance, corporate governance, and fan engagement.

  • The bill has stepped in after the Premier League failed to agree on a deal to share revenues with smaller clubs

  • The collapse of Bury FC and the botched plan for the breakaway Super League have revealed the financial unsustainability of some clubs

  • More stringent tests will be made on club owners, minimum standard of fan engagement will be introduced, and clubs will not be allowed to join breakaway or unlicensed league

❓️🤨 Clubs are down, Premier League still up? The government bill is expected to finally put an end to the cycle of overspending and mismanagement, the bill noted the League’s success globally and how it attracts more viewers and higher revenues than any of its international rivals. The league’s agree revenue was £5.5 billion ($6.8 billion) compared to £2.8 billion for Spain's LaLiga. Premier League specifically was not able to offer clubs in lower leagues a stake of broadcasting revenues, potentially worth about £900 million ($1.2 billion) over six years, a decision which frustrated politicians. Following their meeting, the Premier League said in an email that its clubs reconfirmed their commitment to securing a sustainably-funded agreement with the EFL, subject to the new financial system being formally approved by clubs.
