FIFA, soccer’s global governing body, is close to an agreement with Apple that would give the tech company worldwide television rights for a major new tournament, a monthlong, World Cup-style competition for top teams that will be played for the first time in the United States next summer. FIFA’s deal with Apple could be announced as soon as this month and valued at around $1 billion. If the deal goes through, this would mark the first time that FIFA has agreed to a single worldwide contract. The new tournament will be FIFA’s revamped version of the Club World Cup set to take place 2025 featuring 32 teams from each of the six confederations. Powerhouse clubs FC Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain FC, and Serie A champs Inter Milan are already qualified to participate.

• This however would go against FIFA’s long commitment of free-to-air rights.

• The new tournament will likely only be available to Apple TV+ subscribers.

📺️🧧💸 Doubling Down on the Overs , Apple’s craving for soccer is almost as big as our during international/domestic breaks. Apple has already shelled out $2.5 billion to secure a 10-year global broadcasting rights to US Major League Soccer. MLS and League Cup games are streamed on Apple TV+, with access priced at $14.99 per month or $99 per season for non-subscribers and $12.99 per month or $79 per season for those who subscribe to Apple TV+. Apple sees lives sports as a way to lure new customers to the Apple TV+ streaming service. In addition to the MLS deal, is has secured a deal with Major League Baseball. Apple is attempted to negotie for NFL Sunday Ticket access and is in talks to stream NBA games.

• This potential agreement would give the company's streaming business an edge amid competition among streaming services providers to lap up rights for widely watched sporting events in a bid to add subscribers.

• With MLS deal, Apple TV+ subscribers jumped by more than 100,00 in one day after Messi’s first game with the MLS.

📆🗓️ Take off the off-season, the 32-team event will be held between June 15 and July 13. Usually this period no major events are scheduled to allow players to rest in the off-season a year before the actual World Cup kicks off. FIFA has faced criticism from players union for not consulting them before making announcements about this new event. However, a spokesperson for the governing body release a statement that, “FIFA does not confirm or deny commercial discussions.” While Apple declined to comment.
