Wednesday 05/15

☕️🌦️⚽️ Good morning everyone!  The stage is all set for Championship Sunday in the Premier League. All 10 matches will be starting at the same time, and at the end of 90 minutes of soccer, we will know who this year’s champion is. Last night, Manchester City beat Tottenham 2-0, going 2 points clear of Arsenal in the table. In the 70th minute, Pep Guardiola decided to sub out his goalkeeper, Ederson, as he suffered a big knock moments earlier and Pep was taking no chances. The substitition could likely have won City the title, as the substitute goalkeeper, Ortega, made 2 crucial saves, with the save against Son being the most notable.

Aston Villa seal Champions League spot

Via Aston Villa

🏆️4️⃣ For the first time since 1982, Aston Villa qualifies for Champions League soccer. The team was coincidentally holding their “End of the Season Awards” dinner at the same time that they Tottenham lost to Manchester City, which meant that Villa sealed the top 4 position and they would be playing Champions League soccer next season. Much of the press covers the race for the title, and who can blame us with such an exciting race that will ultimately come down to the last day of the season. The winner for this year’s Premier League will either be Manchester City or Arsenal, but the great stories unfold at the race for the coveted top 4 position that grants a team the honor to playing the biggest European club tournament.

2026 World Cup Co-Host Goes American

@usmntonly

🍁⬆️ American Leads Canadian Soccer Federation. In their finale on their hunt for a new coach, Canada Men’s National Team has decided to hire American Jesse Marsch ahead of Copa America. The owners of Canada’s three MLS teams, Toronto FC, Vancouver Whitecaps, and CF Montreal, pooled their money together to pay the salary of the incoming manager. Marsch becomes the first American to lead the CANMNT in their history, taking over from caretake Mauro Biello. The position has been left vacant since John Herman left to take over at Toronto FC in October.

  • “It’s an absolute honor to represent and lead the Canadian Men’s National Team in our preparation for a home World Cup. The combination of the new leadership inside of Canada Soccer coupled with the potential of this dynamic player pool has inspired me, and I am ready and eager to take on this massive responsibility.”- Jesse Marsch on his appointment

🔙👀 Canadian Roots, Marsch is no stranger to Canada. Marsch made his coaching debut in Canada, stepping into the head coach role for the Montreal Impact (now CF Montreal) in their debut season in MLS, however he was let go after a single season. The exit eventually pathed his way to New York Red Bulls in 2015. With the Red Bulls, Marsch found immediate success, winning the Supporters’ Shield in 2015, NYRB’s second major title in club’s history. This was the start of his wondership with a young midfielder Tyler Adams. Marsch’s success followed him with NYRB sister club RB Leipzig in German Bundesliga and later Red Bull Salzburg in the Austrian Bundesliga. After a lackluster start, Marsch was sacked by Salzburg midseason, where he attempted to prevent a doom-destined Leeds United in the English Premier League.

🤤🔍️ Because your [job] is on my list, because your [job] I can’t resist. After his Leeds’ exit, Marsch was rumored to eye the USMNT Head Coach position, but the US Soccer Federation eventually decided to reinstate Gregg Berhalter after an investigation into 1992 allegations. Marsch’s contract with CANMNT runs until the end of the 2026 World Cup. On paper Canada’s best players are Alphonso Davies, Alistair Johnston, Stephen Eustaquio, Cyle Latin, Jonathan David and Tajon Buchanan. This summer’s Copa America will have Canada open against world champions Argentina, then take on Peru and Chile.
