Wednesday 06/26

☕️🏆️⚽️ Good morning everyone! Raise your hand if you were put asleep by that lackluster performance from Southgate. Fans had hoped for a display of attacking prowess from Gareth Southgate's men, but instead were treated to a cautious and uninspiring performance. With few chances created and a lack of urgency, the match failed to ignite the excitement that typically surrounds major international tournaments. Social media was abuzz with fans expressing their frustration and disappointment, many humorously admitting that the match had put them to sleep. Perhaps the lads will look alive in the elimination rounds!

It’s a Party In the USA?

@MundoAlbiceleste

🥳🐐🏆️ Let em Eat Cake, June 24th marked a special day for football fans around the globe as they celebrated the birthday of one of the sport's greatest icons, Lionel Messi. The legendary Argentine forward turned 37, and his fans made sure to commemorate the occasion in grand style.

🌇 🚨 Time Square Takeover: In a spectacular display of devotion, Argentina national team fans took over Times Square in New York City to celebrate Messi's birthday. The vibrant scene was filled with blue and white flags, banners, and chants, turning one of the world's most famous locations into a lively tribute to their hero.

  • The festivities in Times Square included large digital billboards displaying Messi's image and highlights from his career. Fans gathered to sing "Happy Birthday" and shared stories of how Messi has impacted their lives and their love for football. The event showcased the deep connection Messi has with his supporters and the universal appeal of his achievements on the pitch.

  • Fans who couldn't be in Times Square can still join the celebration online. Share your favorite Messi moments and birthday wishes using the hashtag #MessiDay, and be part of the global community celebrating the magic of Lionel Messi

 🤩👀 Argentina and Messi are staying at the team’s hotel in New Jersey. Yet supporters trekked out to serenade the star. At the Hilton Hotel in Short Hills, Argentina supporters showed up in droves to wish the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner a happy birthday - and even brought a cake in Argentina colors for the occasion.

The usually-reserved Messi recognized the fans' support by popping his head out of his window and waving to them.

Looking Ahead
A Last Dance?

@SportsIllustrated

🏆️🐐👴 Curtain Closing? Is the Copa America Lionel Messi’s Last Dance with Argentina? Is EURO Cristiano Ronaldo’s last dance with Portugal? Could we witness a true last dance of these two donning their respective country kit? It’s truly hard to grasp.

🐐🧦 Messi to Run it Back? Now heading into his seventh Copa, Messi enters it for the first time as the reigning champion. Grouped with Peru, Chile and Canada, Argentina will certainly be tested in the group stage but, make no mistake, they'll be favorites each time. Chile, in particular, will be a personal one for Messi, who will face the 2016 Copa America winners in the same stadium they won in, MetLife Stadium. It's a chance for Argentina to bury some demons on the way to the knockouts. Their path will go through Mexico, Ecuador, Venezuela or Jamaica ahead of the semifinals. The tournament is there for the taking, which is massive for Messi - who will be eager to seize it.

  • Leo has confirmed that Inter Miami is to be his last club, but he’s not prepared to leave football jut yet. But does he have one more World Cup in him?

  • After falling to Chile, missing a crucial penalty along the way, Messi had announced his international retirement.

  • That retirement came on the heels of a heartbreaking loss in the 2014 World Cup final and the 2015 Copa America final. It was followed by another World Cup heartbreak in 2018.

⏳️ ⌛️ Final Siuuuu? Cristiano is set to feature in a record 6th European Championship with Portugal, along with Pepe. As Portugal gears up for their UEFA Euro 2024 journey, the side's most-capped and most successful player will be hoping to make the moment count in what will be his record-sixth Euro campaign with the side. Ronaldo has come a long way since his debut in the competition all the way back in 2004, which eventually saw him clinch the Euro 2016 title despite being subbed off injured in the final against France.

  • Portugal are in currently top of their table of Group F with Turkey 3 points away in second place.

  • While many consider Euro 2024 to be the player’s farewell with Portugal, many back Cristiano to continue playing at least until 41 and appear at the 2026 World Cup

  • Ronaldo's team-mate Pepe's example with the defender set to become the oldest player to appear at Euro 2024 at 41

🤺⚔️ 🤞 Queue Finalissima: We might still be able to see these two goats share the pitch one more time on an international level. But such magic requires two events to occur this summer:

  1. Firstly, Portugal and Cristiano win the Euro 2024 for a 2nd time

  2. Lionel Messi and Argentina to defend their Copa America title

This would launch a clash between the two at FIFA’s Finalissima in 2025 pairing Portugal and Argentina.
