What’s that? Another tournament you have to keep track of? 93 clubs fight to the death in one of England’s oldest soccer tournament. First kicked off in 1960, originally called the League Cup, and is now called Carabao Cup after the energy drink brand paid big bucks to take over at the start of 17-18 season. The tournament includes the top 4 levels of the English Football League System, and the final takes place in Wembley after 7 rounds of footy decide the finalists. The League is known for pairing big clubs with smaller clubs, a David v Goliath, aka the perfect scene for huge upsets (ask Wrexham A.F.C). Initially, the big Premier League clubs would field younger players in order to give them some much needed playing time, but the games changed recently as the Goliaths have started to dominate the playing field again, with Manchester United winning last year’s tournament.

Feel Good Story of The Day

From Notre Dame Soccer to the NFL

✔️ I can make that kick. Says every NFL fan ever when a kicker misses a field goal. For Brandon Aubrey, it was his wife that told him he could make the field goals that were being missed in the NFL. At the time, Brandon’s kicking experience came exclusively from futbol, not from football. He played as a defender in Notre Dame and eventually got drafted by Toronto FC in 2017. Unfortunately for him, he only made it through one season in the MLS, and was eventually cut.

⚽ → 🏈 After playing for Toronto, Brandon continued to pursue his dream of being a soccer player and played for USL side Bethlehem SC, but again only lasted one season. After his wife suggested that he could make the field goals that were being kicked on TV, Brandon got serious and got to training. The SSB team found footage of Brandon practicing his kicks at what looks like a high school field, and footage like this only makes the story that much better (IT ONLY HAS 5 LIKES). He eventually landed a kicking job in the USFL and played there for two years and most recently was picked up by the Dallas Cowboys and has won the starting position.

The Hat-Trick That Wasn't

Harry Kane Bundesliga GIF by FC Bayern Munich

⚽⚽⚽🤏 The Almost Hat-Trick. In a scintillating display of skill and precision, Harry Kane found the back of the net three times during Bayern Munich's resounding 7-0 victory over Bochum. The crowd erupted, the commentators went wild, and Kane basked in the glory of what he believed to be a well-deserved hat trick. But alas, fate had a different plan.

🤔🕵 🇩🇪 The German Quirk. As it turns out, Germany has a unique definition of what constitutes a "flawless" or "classic" hat-trick. It's not just about scoring three goals in a single match; it's about the timing and sequence of those goals. According to German football tradition, the goals must be scored consecutively, without any interruptions from other players. Unfortunately for Kane, his three goals were not in the required sequence, leading to the disqualification of his hat-trick. Not so neat.

😖🍭🎉 A Bittersweet Victory. While Kane's hat-trick may not have officially counted, there's no denying the impact he had on the match. His clinical finishing and relentless attacking prowess played a crucial role in Bayern Munich's emphatic win. So, even though the record books may not reflect it, Kane's performance will forever be etched in the memories of those who witnessed it. As Intern Jose would say, “you can take the man out of Spurs, but not the Spurs out of the man….”
